Springfield pest control

We are Massachusetts's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Springfield raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Springfield pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Springfield Raccoon Control Tip: What Does Raccoon Feces Look Like? Where is it Found?
Most animals undergo bowel movements to eliminate solid and semi-solid waste materials (feces) from their digestive tract. Now imagine you spot feces on your property. Upon closer inspection, you see that it doesn't belong to your dog or cat. You know it must be from a wild critter. Maybe you have a wildlife infestation problem. You keep pondering: what animal could it be?

If only you knew how to identify the feces of animals, you could be one step closer to identifying the culprit. That's why we're going to explore how to identify the feces of one of the common nuisance critters in the United States: Raccoons.

What Does Raccoon Feces Look Like?
  • Shape & Dimension
Raccoon droppings are cylindrical and are about three to five inches long, broken into crumbling segments. While their waste looks similar to that of a fox or opossum, raccoon scat has blunt ends. The diameter of their feces is similar to the pinky finger of an adult human.

  • Color & Texture
Raccoons are omnivores, meaning they will eat both plants and other animals. This includes berries, fruits, mussels, frogs, turtles, mice, bird eggs, rabbits, muskrats, and even garbage. Consequently, the color of their droppings varies depending on their active diet. However, the color ranges from light to dark brown.

Another feature that can help you identify a raccoon's feces is its texture. Raccoon feces often contain pieces of undigested berries and seeds that are readily visible to the eyes. This makes it easy to differentiate it from a dog's poop, which tends to be smooth.

Where it is Found?
Raccoons are fascinating creatures in that they make use of latrines. This means that they pick a spot where they defecate and urinate most of the time. Hence, in a raccoon latrine, you're going to find an accumulation of droppings. Their latrines are usually located some distance away from their nesting sites.

In the wild, raccoons form large latrines usually on fallen logs and the bases of large trees near water bodies.

However, as raccoons have learned to reside near human settlements, they also form their latrine in rooftops, attics, woodpiles, haylofts, and even on or under decks.

If you find a raccoon latrine, then you can be almost certain that a raccoon is residing nearby. As a homeowner, that's no good news considering the destructive capabilities of these nasty critters.

Dangers of Raccoon Latrines
Raccoons are the primary host of Baylisascaris procyonis, a roundworm that can be dangerous to humans and pets. Roundworm eggs are passed through their feces. When humans or pets ingest these eggs - mainly by inhaling - they contract this harmful parasite. If left untreated, this infection can result in loss of coordination, loss of muscle control, and even blindness. That's why it's important to keep your property clear of raccoon droppings.

How to Clean Raccoon Latrines
  • Take the necessary precautions
As noted earlier, raccoon feces pose a serious risk to your health. That's why you need to protect yourself before you begin cleaning. Ensure that you wear appropriate long sleeve clothing with thick material. Also, make sure you wear disposable gloves or thick gloves like your gardening gloves. The aim is to ensure that no part of your body comes in direct contact with the feces. Also, wear a breathing mask, so you do not inhale any airborne spores. Goggles will also help keep the spores from entering your eyes.

  • Clean-Up and Decontamination
Before you begin, prepare lots of garbage bags to carry the feces, as well as a sealable container to store the bags. Use a shovel to scrape off the feces and put it into the garbage bags. Also, scrape off all remnants and put them in the bag. The bags can then be put in the container. If the latrine is in your attic, your insulation might have been heavily torn and soiled by the feces. If that's the case, your best bet is to remove and replace your insulation. Finally, spray the entire area with a disinfectant to kill all germs and bacteria.

  • Disposal
Before disposing of the feces, makes sure that the bags are well sealed, as well as the container. You have two options for disposal. Some people bury the material. However, incinerating the material is better because high temperature kills all the parasites, ensuring that no harmful particles escape from the feces.

Wrap Up
Handling raccoon feces is a risky endeavor. That's why it's recommended to involve a wildlife removal expert. They will not only help you clear off the raccoon feces but will also solve any raccoon infestation problem you might be experiencing.
